“All nine passengers and a crew of two onboard the aircraft are safe and accounted for, and are being transferred to a nearby onshore installation,” Bristow said in a statement.

According to Bristow, the aircraft, of Sikorsky S-76C++ type, was involved in a “controlled water landing.”

The company did not say what the reasons for the incident were.

“We are incredibly thankful that everyone on board the helicopter is safe and has been accounted for,” said Bristow’s Regional Director Africa Duncan Moore. “Our highest priority is to take care of our crew and clients and their family members and provide them with any assistance needed.”

“All the eleven souls on board including two crew members were rescued alive,” he said, adding that the Accident Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Aviation has commenced an investigation of the incident.

The two crew members and nine passengers were rescued by a German merchant ship within the vicinity. There was no death but the crew sustain minor injuries on wrist and shoulders during the ditch. The Nigerian Navy was involved in the rescue operations and their boat escorted the  9 passengers and  2 crew members rescued into harbour. Caverton Helicopters also assisted in locating the ditched aircraft.

The new crash occurred less than six months after another helicopter belonging to the same company crashed in Lagos. The chopper had on August 12, 2015 plunged into the Lagos Lagoon, killing six of the 12 persons on board.
