The bodies of two helicopter crew members located on Kineros

The bodies of two out of the three crew members of the Greek Navy helicopter that crashed early on Thursday off the small island of Kineros in the eastern Aegean Sea were found, according to information.

The bodies were found on a mountainside at a remote area of Kineros island, 40-50 metres away from the top of the mountain where the first remains of the helicopter were found.

“The Agusta Bell helicopter was taking part in the night military exercise ‘Τhunder’. It had taken off from a frigate sailing in the area and disappeared from radar around 02:45 am.

Armed forces chief Vangelis Apostolakis said weather conditions had been normal at the time when radar contact and communications were lost.

Earlier, Turkey issued a Notice to Airmen saying the Greek rescue operation was within its maritime search and rescue region and that all efforts should be coordinated with Turkish authorities.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Panos Kammenos, who was visiting Brussels, is expected to return to Athens.

Alternate Defence Minister Dimitris Vitsas and the chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff said: “We cannot yet express our condolences because we have not found them.”

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has been in constant contact with the Hellenic Army since early in the morning in order to be briefed on the developments. On his part, main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his deep sorrow for the accident.
