  • OTS personnel wear pink armbands, hear Mass in show of unity
  • They are hurt by ‘laglag-bala accusations and are asking the public for understanding
  • Even their families have been hit by the scandal, they say

Hurting over being implicated in the ‘laglag-bala’ scam, members of the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) are looking to the heavens for divine help.

On Friday, beleaguered security personnel of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) held a Mass and wore pink armbands as a show of solidarity amid the bullet-planting crisis which has tarnished the image of the country’s main airport.

Wearing pink armbands, some of the members openly cried as the priest sought God’s help in finally ending the crisis which has also badly affected them.

“We have been pilloried, demonized and shamed by these allegations, which is why we are seeking divine intervention to spare us,” Employees Association of Transport Security national president Edgar Anas told Philippine Star. “There is no truth to the allegations.”

“We are asking God for help to enlighten the public about the ‘tanim-bala’ issue,” he added.

According to Anas, it is not only the airport screeners but their families as well that are being ridiculed and ostracized due to the scandal.

“Even our families have been dragged into the controversy,” he said. “The accusations by the public that we are part of the ‘laglag-bala’ is hurting them too.”

Anas added they will continue to wear the pink armbands “until the ‘laglag-bala’ issue is resolved.”

For his part Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Jose Angel Honrado said he would continue to stand by his personnel even as he called on them not to react to the accusations.

“Many among you have become a victim of insults from the suspicious riding public as you go about your job,” he said. “However, the innocent remain calm and resolute in difficult times.”

“I give you my commitment that we will surmount this challenge. The National Bureau of Investigation, Office for Transportation Security and the PNP Aviation Security Group are working together to solve this case,” he stressed.
